North Korea details plan to fire missile salvo toward Guam

Japan could legally intercept a North Korean missile headed towards Guam, its defence minister said on Thursday, but experts believe Japan does not now have the capability to do so.

"The system's created to engage multiple targets simultaneously, so that should be quite feasible to do", Bennett said.

"Strong fears are spreading that nuclear weapons may be used in the not-so-distant future", he said.

All this comes amid reports that Pyongyang may have finally succeeded in miniaturising a nuclear weapon that could fit on an inter-continental missile - a prospect long-dreaded by the U.S. and its Asian allies.

As former US Assistant Secretary of State PJ Crowley points out, the US and North Korea came close to armed conflict in 1994, when Pyongyang refused to allow worldwide inspectors into its nuclear facilities.

The island is also home to several unique species, such as the flightless koko bird, the damselfish and the Serianthes tree, according to the University of Guam.

Roughly 2,100 miles south of North Korea, Guam is one of the USA territories closest to Asia.

The US Seventh Fleet now has six Aegis ballistic missile defence ships in the region capable of targeting North Korean missiles, and Japan has a further four.

Reportedly called America's "permanent aircraft carrier" by military commanders, Guam is home to some 6,000 USA service members.

But he said that investors remained wary of events that could spike volatility in the foreign exchange market on the holiday Friday.

The Pentagon has prepared a plan to launch a pre-emptive strike on the North's missile sites upon a presidential order, to which a B-1B bomber attack from Guam is key, NBC reported Wednesday, citing two senior military officials. On Saturday, the UN Security Council unanimously approved a resolution tightening the sanctions against North Korea.

"Just because the rhetoric goes up, doesn't mean our posture changes", one official said. This is the answer of our heroic Kim Il Sung-Kim Jong Il working class which has been grown up under the warm care of the Party, ' Pak said, referring to North Korea's first two leaders. The country's not happy with the US President, Donald Trump.

"This is a system that has never been called upon to shoot down a North Korean missile before".

While North Korea regularly threatens to destroy the United States and its allies, the report was unusual in its detail.

Trump is "extremely getting on the nerves" of his soldiers with the "fire and fury" comments, he said. Critics included fellow Republican John McCain, head of the Armed Forces Committee in the US Senate, who said Trump should tread cautiously.

"It's a very serious topic for sure, and it can be scary, but you know, if it's gonna happen, it's gonna happen", she says.

Mr Trump might have threatened North Korea with language uncommon for a United States president, but this does not mean the USA is actively moving on to a war footing.

China, which is North Korea's closest ally despite its anger at Pyongyang's missile and nuclear programs, described the situation as "complex and sensitive", and urged calm and a return to talks.

The global community is calling for a calming of tensions, fearing the Korean peninsula is being pushed dangerously close to the brink of war.

US intelligence reports indicated this month that North Korea has produced a miniaturized nuclear warhead that could be placed on a missile.

Japan said Thursday it is ready to protect Guam, with the country's defense minister saying its military is capable of shooting down North Korean missiles before they reach the island.

Japan's Nikkei also handed back earlier gains and was a shade lower.
