North Korea claimed "only absolute force" can work on someone as "bereft of reason" as Trump and detailed plans to fire a salvo of missiles into waters around the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam.

ANALYST'S TAKE: The U.S.jobs figure "was through the roof" and the NFIB survey "painted a much better picture for the U.S. economy than most believed", Stephen Innes of OANDA said in a report.

The selling in USA markets started on August 8 after President Trump warned North Korea that threats will be "met with fire and fury".

"We keep closely watching the speech and behavior of the USA", it said.

All 11 major S&P sectors were lower and the consumer discretionary index was the biggest loser with a 1 percent drop.

Gold prices have maintained a firm tone with a push to 2-month highs on Thursday as underlying demand for defensive assets remained an important feature. The Nasdaq composite lost 0.2 per cent, to 6,370.46.

Wall Street stocks fell for the second straight session Wednesday as worries about US-North Korea tensions rattled investors.

Geopolitical concerns continued to weigh on Wall Street amid an ongoing escalation in tensions between the USA and North Korea.

Washington has been testing its missile defenses in response to the North's stepped-up development and the current escalation of tensions could lead to pressure for the us military to try to shoot down the North's missiles in midflight if they are heading toward Guam.

ENERGY: Benchmark U.S. crude lost 23 cents to $48.94 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Barrick Gold Corporation ABX stock popped 1.42%, while Newmont Mining Corporation NEM gained 1.01%.

Blue Apron shares hit a record low at US$5.03 after the meal-kit delivery service provider reported a bigger-than-expected loss in its first quarterly report as a public company. TripAdvisor shares shed $2.70, or 6.8 percent, to $36.85.

The heavyweight financials sector, which accounts for more than a third of the index's weight, was down 0.25 percent as US and Canadian bond yields fell.

TIME OUT: Fossil tumbled 23.6 percent after the watch maker said sales continued to weaken, falling short of analysts' estimates.

The euro was struggling on Thursday as it came under pressure from the latest bout of risk-off, with traders seeking to unwind some of their positions following the strong rally seen over the past month. The dollar was down 1.2 percent at 0.9627 Swiss francs, while an ounce of gold was 1 percent higher at $1,275.

Charter Communications rose 2.9 per cent on news Altice is exploring a bid for the cable giant.

In the cash market, the blue chip Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 22085.34, down 33.08 or -0.15%. The 30-year Treasury bond rose 27/32 in price to yield 2.8252 per cent, from 2.867 per cent late on Tuesday.

Oil prices settled lower after a volatile session on increasing exports from key OPEC producers and news of lower crude shipments from Saudi Arabia.
