A Tube carriage caught fire - causing a mass evacuation which witnesses described as "terrifying".

The British Transport Police say they do not now believe the cause of the fire to be suspicious. "The station is closed because of a fire alert".

One commuter posted a picture on Twitter which showed passengers covering their mouths with jumpers and clothing in a smoky train carriage.

The British Transport Police confirmed there was a fire and said it is not now being treated as suspicious.

A video taken by a passenger appears to show the Tube train in a tunnel and an alarm can be heard beeping.

A spokesperson for Transport for London said: "The station is now closed due to a fire alert, there is no one in the station, all the lines that run through the station aren't stopping there".

Another said: "Don't go near Oxford Circus. Hope everyone is ok!"
