The man, who lived locally, was believed to have gone out for a walk with his dogs at about 9am.

"I would suggest that this area is a well known drugs exchange area".

"Once there was a chap in there, he was about 22 or 23 and he was just staring at me, what he was in there for I don't know but we do see a lot of people in there".

Mr Ransom, who takes his Lurcher dog to the site, said: "It's the one place around here you can really let the dogs off".

He said: "This is not in the norm for Norfolk ..."

He added: "It's a worry, especially out this way".

The rape remains an active cold case - with police now investigating any possible links between the crimes. As this is an area where people go cycling and running some people may have other video footage from mobile devices and we would ask that this is saved and contact made with the police so that it can be reviewed to see if it assists the investigation.

Anyone with any information are being urged to contact Norfolk Police immediately on 101, quoting Operation Graduate, visit the mobile police station or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

He urged anyone who has noticed any unusual activity in the area recently to come forward.

Chief Superintendent Mike Fawcett said he understands the shock of residents "that a murder with this level of brutality can happen to an elderly man going about his daily business in our county". Local police patrols have also been increased.

The Home Office post-mortem examination, carried out on Sunday afternoon, concluded that the victim, who was out walking his two dogs at the time, had been "subjected to a serious assault".

They warned the public that the killer could still be in the woods.

Jon Wise, owner of Banham Butchers, said: "I am very surprised and saddened by the news".

Police revealed they were unclear about the motive behind the attack, describing it as "out of the ordinary".

Detectives said last night that the motive for killing of the man, who was a "well liked member of the community" remains unclear.
