Proposal making Vande Mataram mandatory in BMC schools gets nod

Following the Madras High Court ruling making Vande Mataram mandatory in schools in Tamil Nadu, Sandeep Patel, a BJP corporator from P-South Ward (Goregaon West) of the BMC had demanded that singing of the national song be made compulsory in BMC-run schools.

The decision was taken during the BMC's general body meeting, chaired by Mumbai Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar. The NM filed by Patel stated that every civic school student must sing Vande Mataram at least twice a week. Therefore, I strongly felt that the BMC should consider this proposal, " said Patel adding that he was also of the opinion that the song should be sung in all BMC statutory committee meetings. "You may shoot me or throw me out of the country, but we will not sing it", he said.

"To instill a sense of patriotism among the youth, they need to remember the period of the freedom struggle", he said.

SP's group leader in the House Rais Shaikh said the move was "unacceptable" and a "murder of democracy".

In April 2017, the Supreme Court had issued a notice to the central government asking for its response to a petition that sought to make singing Vande Mataram mandatory at all educational institutes. "Everybody should recite Vande Mataram, but if it is not recited what will go wrong?" he had asked. Although it was opposed by members of the Samajwadi Party (SP) and All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-Ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM). "That is why I opposed the proposal", Shaikh was quoted saying.

Once the civic chief forwards the proposal to the state government and affter getting its nod, the proposal will be implemented in all civic-run schools.
