PS4 Firmware 5.0 Beta Rolls Out Today; Change Notification Colors, Message Improvements, Family on PSN, and More

The firmware in question is firmware 5.00-code named NOBUNAGA.

First, let's get the basics out of the way- the beta update is rolling out now, and if you were selected as a beta tester, you should be receiving an email that explains how to download and install the update on your system some time shortly.

Sony has added new features to make sure that the PlayStation Network is more family friendly.

When the update is live, it will make it easier to set up PSN accounts for children and customize parental control settings for each user.

Will allow for multiple adults to be part of a single family, and allow The Family Manager to promote another adult inside the family to a Parent/Guardian.

Finally, the 5.00 update fixes an issue where administrative parental control features were applied to all accounts; with this new update, parental controls will only affect the desired account.

According to the patch notes listed on the official website, the company is bringing in several new social features for the community.

Managing a friends list on any console is always a bit of a pain, PS4 is remedying that with the new feature of a "Custom Lists" tab.

This will allow you to create and edit custom lists of your friends and arrange them into specific groups, based on the games you play, or groups of friends you like to hang out with online.

Users will be able to bind a community that they own to their broadcast. VR players also get the added bonus of new support for 5.1ch and 7.1ch virtual surround sound when watching DVDs or Blu-rays in cinematic mode.

Streamers that like to use the popular Twitch platform can now stream in full 1080p/60fps.

You can now share music via messages. Shared tracks can be listened to directly from the message or through the Spotify app from the PS Messages app on mobile and added to a playlist.

When viewing content or even gaming, sometimes messages can be distracting.

Users will be able to disable pop-up notifications while watching a movie or television show on the PlayStation 4. This setting is off by default, so go to Settings Notifications to disable notifications and go uninterrupted during your videos. The messages themselves can be also be turned off-meaning that a notification will still be sent, but a preview of the message will not be visible until the recipient actually opens the message. The final feature for messaging is the changing of color of pop-up notifications with either white (default) or black.

Quick Menu updates: The Notifications tab, which shows download progress or new invitations, can now be accessed directly from the Quick Menu without leaving a game. Now, users will be able to view more notifications inside the Quick Menu. There is an improved tournaments bracket viewer, and finally, updated language support which includes Czech, Hungarian, Romanian, Greek, Thai, Indonesian and Vietnamese languages.

The Quick Menu, which can be accessed by pressing and holding down the PS button on the DualShock 4 controller, has also been updated.
