Raptors contacted Cavaliers about Kyrie Irving

It's one thing for James to play with younger players - Irving was only 22 years old when James returned to the Cavaliers. Once again, it will come down to their superstar LeBron James and his future with the team. The Cavaliers want a young star to join them via trade.

"Of course, the Cleveland Cavaliers officials prefer to re-sign the three-time champion LeBron James to a long-term contract deal and pursue National Basketball Association championship titles together into his sunset, but the ball club are treating his disinclination to carry out as an indication to protect themselves long term in the Kyrie Irving trade, National Basketball Association sources said", according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowsk. However, Cleveland is not as interested in the "win-now deal" which these veteran players would give them. That may be hard for the Spurs to accomplish, unless they had a sudden change of heart with Kawhi Leonard (something very unlikely to happen, one would think). Beyond Irving's decision to ask for a trade, Cleveland has determined that it's unwilling to simply be reactive to James' possible departure. You fly to Europe and convince him that the Knicks are headed in the right direction after two incredibly dysfunctional seasons under Phil Jackson. While he is expected to be traded ahead of next month's training camp, there are rumblings of Irving potentially staying in Cleveland for another year.

Apologies to teams like the Portland Trailblazers and Indiana Pacers for not waxing poetic about their talented rosters (not to mention the Houston Rockets, who separated two Bulls three-peats with back-to-back championships of their own).

The Cavaliers would ideally like the Suns' rookie Josh Jackson in any deal, but Jackson, the fourth overall pick from the 2017 NBA Draft, doesn't sound too positive about the likelihood of moving to northeast Ohio.

I'd be surprised if any team didn't at least inquire on Irving. That is of particular note to the Spurs not only because of extension talks, but also because San Antonio is not blessed with a top-end young asset (aside from the untradeable Kawhi Leonard) that would entice Cleveland. It might have proved that Leonard was more crucial to the Spurs' success than any singular Warriors player was to their squad, but we're talking about ranking teams, not individual players.

The Miami Heat's Hassan Whiteside goes to the basket against the Cleveland Cavaliers' Channing Frye, right, and Kevin Love (0) during the second quarter at the AmericanAirlines Arena in Miami on Saturday, March 19, 2016.
