At least thirty deaths were reported until Saturday night which, until Sunday afternoon, climbed to 49.

Five thousand and six hundred trained personnel of the Nepal Police, one thousand 700 APF personnel, and 8,300 Nepalese Army personnel, as well as helicopters, have been mobilized for search and rescue operation, the Ministry has stated.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, at least 13 persons were injured in the rain-related incidents and 17 others remained missing.

In neighbouring India, rescuers were desperately trying to reach two packed buses swept into a gorge by a landslide so powerful it destroyed an entire stretch of highway.

But dozens were still missing somewhere at the bottom of the ravine, with soldiers and rescuers clawing through the mud and rock to reach them.

The monsoon season, which starts in June and ends in September, causes big floods in Nepal each year.

Around 31,000 families have been displaced by the floods and landslides, which began Friday, he said.

Nepal's weather department warned that heavy rain was expected to continue for another day, following days of torrential downpours.

The District Natural Disaster Rescue Committee has distributed dry foods to victims in the flood-hit areas.

In the popular jungle safari resort of Sauraha in Chitwan, hotels were forced to shift their guests to higher floors as waters rushed into the premises.

Nepal Cabinet on Saturday had held an emergency meeting during which Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba had ordered the local district administrations to intensify the rescue and release activities.

Thousands of acres of land have been submerged under water and the eastern Terai was totally deprived of power supply, according to the state-owned Nepal Electricity Authority.
