Hailing from Germany, Dr Pfau had been staying in Pakistan since 1960, when she was just 29, dedicating her life to cure patients of leprosy. She left her homeland and made Pakistan her home to serve humanity.

She died after a prolonged age-related illness.

Widely known as Pakistan's Mother Teresa, Pfau was eulogised by the prime minister and army chief for her contributions towards freeing the country of a contagious disease that can cause disfigurement.

After completing a medical degree and joining a French Roman Catholic Order, she visited Pakistan in the 1960s and stayed after first seeing leprosy during a visit to a dispensary in Karachi.

She trained Pakistani doctors and attracted foreign donations, founding Pakistan's National Leprosy Control Programme and the Marie Adelaide Leprosy Centre, which has a presence in every Pakistani province.

She studied medicine in Germany in the 1950s and joined the Daughters of the Heart of Mary before leaving for India via Karachi.

"Well if it doesn't hit you the first time, I don't think it will ever hit you", she told the BBC in 2010. She was awarded the Hilal-e-Pakistan in 1989 and Hilal-e-Imtiaz in 1979 by the government of Pakistan. She was a German nun and a member of the Society of Daughters of the Heart of Mary, who devoted the last 50 years of her life to fighting leprosy in Pakistan.

German embassy said in a statement that German ambassador Martin Kobler expressed his heartfelt condolences and sympathies to the representative of the Maria Adelaide Leprosy Centre.

"Dr Pfau's services to end leprosy in Pakistan can not be forgotten".

"With great concern we have got the sad massage of the death of Dr Ruth Pfau". We are losing with her an important symbol of the German Pakistan friendship.
