Roger Federer through to Rogers Cup semi-finals

Denis Shapovalov lost to fourth-seeded German Alexander Zverev in Saturday’s semifinals but still pocketed a cool $220,760 in prize money

World number three Federer, who faces Dutchman Robin Haase in the last four, was never seriously pushed by Spain's Bautista Agut, who is winless in seven matches against the Swiss maestro.

With world number two Rafael Nadal eliminated on Thursday by 18-year-old Canadian Denis Shapovalov and world number one Andy Murray sidelined by a rib injury, Federer has an opportunity to regain his world number one ranking.

"I told him he had a great run, well done to him, to not worry too much that he lost today", said Zverev.

Zverev was hit by the double fault bug as well tossing in six of his own, but the World No. 8 saved three break points serving for the match at 6-5 and eventually closed it out. "I think it really shows how I've improved mentally, along with just finding my game at the right moments". "I still have to work really hard every day".

"I started off pretty slow, just drained from yesterday".

"I'm very excited to be back in the finals", Federer said.

Next up for Federer on Saturday will be surprise semi-finalist Robin Haase of the Netherlands, who rallied to defeat diminutive Argentine Diego Schwartzman 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in a battle of unseeded players.

Flag-waving fans in the packed grandstands at Uniprix Stadium were hoping for more magic, but Zverev was too strong, winning 81 percent of the points off his serve compared to 64 percent for Shapovalov. I've been able to keep points short.

"I played a lot of good matches, especially yesterday against (seventh-seeded Grigor) Dimitrov", Haase said.

Haase will face the victor between second-seeded Roger Federer and Roberto Bautista Agut in the semifinals on Saturday.

"I didn't even know if I could ever play tennis again", Haase said.

Nadal will play Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov, who beat 2009 U.S. Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro 6-3, 7-6 (4) on a sultry Wednesday afternoon match.

Unlike the match against Ferrer, in which he made a lot of unforced errors before managing a 4-6,6-4, 6-2 win, Federer was in complete control while decimating Agut.

Federer leads Zverev 2-1 with the German winning in Halle a year ago while Federer gained revenge this past June.

Roger Federer recovered from an uncharacteristic out-of-sorts first set to defeat David Ferrer in the third round of the Rogers Cup.

Through this victory, which was peppered with nine aces, the 36-year-old legend has extended his match-winning streak to 16, which is his longest win streak in five years.
