Russian Daesh suspect arrested in Adana

A suspected Islamic State militant has been arrested in Turkey accused of planning an attack on a USA military jet at a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation air base, local news reports.

Bakiev was detained after police surveillance showed him scouting the nearby city of Adana with the aim of carrying out his attack, local news reports.

Bakiev appealed for 2,800 Turkish Lira (nearly $800) from other militants on the Telegram messaging application, which IS sympathizers use widely, to buy a drone, police said.

Bakiev told authorities that he was a member of Islamic State and planned to use a drone to bring down a USA plane and carry out an attack against US nationals, Dogan said.

Bakiev also meant to attack the local Alevi community in Adana city, the statement said.

The state-run news agency reports Bakiev was plotting the attack at that military base, or an American plane stationed there.

The Alevi religious minority, an offshoot of Shia Islam, is the largest religious group in Turkey after Sunnis.

The private Dogan news agency said during his questioning that he allegedly defended the need to kill Alevis and considered them "enemies of Allah", the statement said.

The U.S. has used the base as a staging post for its aircraft in the fight against the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq.

Police said Bakiev had confessed to being a member of ISIL and being in Adana to carry out an attack for the terror group.

ISIS has used drones to attack UK-backed coalition troops Iraq and Syria. It has also refused entry to at least 38,269 individuals.
