The former Olympic champion from Australia missed much of the past two seasons because of injury, but she produced the fastest time tin the semi-finals.

Kendra Harrison returned to the London track where she broke the world record previous year to breeze impressively into the semi-finals of the 100 metres hurdles at the World Athletics Championships on Friday.

Besieged by injuries, Sally Pearson missed almost two years.

Pearson, whose English mother brought her up as a single parent and in very straitened circumstances, taking two jobs so her daughter could realise her dream, said it had been a long and hard road back to the top.

Australian Sally Pearson, another athlete with happy memories of this stadium, also looked sharp in the arena where she won the Olympic title in 2012, winning her heat in the third fastest time, 12.72 seconds.

It was a third major 100m hurdles title for Pearson, who had previously won gold at the 2011 world championships in Daegu and the 2012 London Olympics.

American Dawn Harper Nelson, who won the Olympic gold in Beijing and silver in London behind Pearson, took silver in 12.63 seconds. On the finish line I thought I had finished fourth.

While loath to compared athletes from different eras, Australian head coach Craig Hilliard declared Pearson deserved to be ranked right up with the greatest modern Australian track athletes.

Pearson thanked her close inner-circle for getting her across the line. "Just keep running and go fast, '" said Pearson, who turns 31 next month.

"I was pretty nervous because it has been a while since I've done a championship race but I felt comfortable". "But there's something deep down inside of you knows you've got that bit more to give". "It's a relief to be world champion".

"I've left no stone unturned to get here". Pamela Dutkiewicz of Germany edged out Harrison for the bronze by.02 seconds. In contrast to the experience of Pearson and Harper-Nelson, this is just Dutkiewicz's second senior medal, though the German will be confident heading into the European Championships in her home nation next year.

Meanwhile, local favourite Mo Farah had to settle for a silver medal as he was beaten to 5000 metres gold by Muktar Edris in his final major championship race.

"Toward the end, I could see Sally out of the corner of my eye".

She then missed the Rio Olympics because of Achilles and hamstring problems.

Pearson sacked her last coach and started coaching herself this year.

"She is the first person to do that, anyone would be impressed".

"It took me hours and hours and hours on the first day to write a program out and decide what was best for me and what I could and couldn't do, being an older athlete, having these injury troubles".

'I've worked so hard, I don't know what has just happened out there.

An overjoyed Pearson jumped up and down to celebrate her win - she was then picked up by the championships mascot Hero the Hedgehog and swung around before he carried her off round the track.

She parted with her long-term coach from her junior days, Sharon Hannan, after she won silver in Moscow.
