Scattered afternoon storms return — FIRST ALERT FORECAST

Once again, we had gorgeous weather this afternoon.

In the extended outlook, clouds will increase with a chance of some scattered showers and thunderstorms on Monday. Remember, our average high temperature for this time of the year is 89°.

The Weather Service said more dry and lovely weather will follow, with skies over Madison mostly sunny Saturday through Monday, and sunny Tuesday and Wednesday, highs near 75, 75, 76, 78 and 79, and lows Friday night through Tuesday night around 56, 57, 58, 59 and 59. That means we keep those temps seasonably cool heading into the upcoming weekend. There was no riptide forecast available for Saturday and Sunday.

About 4:10 a.m. radar showed thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the area.

SUNDAY: Isolated rain showers and thunderstorms return for Sunday, with a high temperature of 83 degrees. Much like the last several weekends, Sunday should offer more sunshine with drier air moving in.

As of now, showers are possible late Monday into late morning Tuesday. "Many locations could see over 2" of rain. Skies look to be a mix of sun and clouds.

Thursday night, some valley fog is likely overnight, otherwise partly cloudy to clear skies. Readings are a bit warmer in the lower and middle 80s. More unsettled weather is in the forecast for much of next week. The weekend looks dry. The best chance for this is across the southern half of the state. Showers and storms return by Friday.

Tonight: Mostly Cloudy, Scattered Showers/Storms (40%).

Now, keep in mind, periodic rain means there will be some breaks in the rainfall action. Rain gear is a good idea for the bus stop and for the morning commute. We'll keep our eyes on the longer range trends, but the wetter-than-normal August doesn't seem to be over with just yet.

High pressure will take control tomorrow and deliver a mainly sunny day with low humidity values. It's also available (for free) on your local mobile marketplace - Android, iPhone, etc.

We are watching two areas...
