Several deaths reported in Burkina Faso attack

At least 17 people were killed and eight others wounded in the "terrorist attack", Communications Minister Remi Dandjinou told reporters early on Monday, adding that one French citizen and several other foreigners were included in the provisional death toll.

"They [attackers] are confined to one part of the building they attacked".

The gunmen reportedly began opening fire on customers of Hotel Bravia and the Aziz Istanbul Restaurant shortly after 9pm local time (10pm BST) on Sunday, 13 August, on Ouagadougou's busy Kwame Nkrumah Avenue. Security forces blocked off the area and were battling the shooters. Among the dead was at least one French national.

Police evacuated civilians from the site before moving against the suspected jihadists.

Video footage posted on Twitter shows people fleeing, as shouting and gunshots are heard.

In December 2016 a dozen soldiers were killed in an assault on their base in the north of the country.

Security forces have been deployed in the Burkina Faso capital, Ouagadougou, as authorities deal with what they believe is a possible terror attack.

Thirty people were killed when gunmen attacked a restaurant and hotel in Ouagadougou in January 2016 in an incident claimed by al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far. An Australian and a Romanian, abducted in 2015, are still being held hostage by Islamist groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda.
