Solar Eclipse Will Cost Almost $700M in Productivity

Others threw the towel in and just took the entire day off.

Andrew Challenger, vice president of the Chicago-based company, told NBC News that he estimates 87 million workers across th will take a break to see the solar eclipse. A study of Bureau of Labor Statistics data estimates US businesses may lose $694 million in productivity due to the eclipse.

Canada previously saw total eclipses in 1963, 1972, 1979 and 2008, with the next opportunity in 2024.

The solar eclipse will cost American businesses almost $700 million in lost productivity thanks to those minutes when workers step out of the office or take the whole day off to catch a glimpse of the sight above, according to a report in Forbes.

CGC claimed that data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics' (BLS) most recent survey in 2016 shows that 82.8 percent employed citizens work an average weekday schedule, whereas the remainder doesn't (i.e. night shifts, rotating shifts, etc.).

The outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas said that there will be about 87 million employees under the path of the sun and moon dance.

The Monday after the Super Bowl, meanwhile, resulted in an estimated $290 million in lost output for every 10 minutes of the workday spent by workers discussing the game or watching game highlights and re-runs of their favorite Super Bowl commercials.

The cost to states and metro areas directly in the path of the eclipse, where traffic is expected to increase substantially, could see nearly $200 million in lost productivity combined. But it's probably going to be hard to get work out of people while the eclipse is happening. And there is a benefit to companies that celebrate the eclipse together, Challenger said.

"Building in time around lunch to mark the special occasion will encourage employees to interact and have something to be excited about", he added.
