Woman killed as India Pak trade fire in Poonch

Jammu: A 40-year-old woman was killed in firing by the Pakistani army at border villages and Indian posts along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district on Saturday, officials said.

Around 0520 hours, mortar shells fired from across the border exploded near the house of Mohd.

A defence spokesman said the Pakistan army initiated the unprovoked firing on the Indian Army posts at around 5 PM today. "If they (Pak Army) fire one bullet, we (Indian Army) retaliate with 10 bullets", Singh said here.

In the exchange of fire, Naib Subedar Jagram Singh Tomar was grievously injured and later succumbed to his injuries. He was shifted to 425 Army Hospital in Poonch.

The woman has been identified by the police as Raqia Begum (45).

The official said due to heavy firing and mortar shelling by Pakistani troops, the residents living close to the LoC in Balakote sector could not take refuge in underground bunkers.

On Saturday morning, a civilian in Poonch lost his life after Pakistan resorted to shelling.

India and Pakistan routinely accuse each other's forces of violating a 2003 ceasefire accord.
