Secretary Of State Tillerson Says There Is "No Imminent Threat" From North Korea

His warning is the latest in a series of aggressive statements exchanged between Washington and Pyongyang following the U.N.'s adoption of tough sanctions over the weekend. The DPRK must choose to stop isolating itself and stand down its pursuit of nuclear weapons.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said today North Korea's "actions will continue to be grossly overmatched by" those of the United States and stressed the futility and catastrophic potential of a nuclear conflict or arms race.

"North Korea (DPRK) best not make any more threats to the United States. They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen", Trump said.

North Korea successfully tested an intercontinental ballistic missile last month for the first time, and US intelligence agencies assess that Pyongyang is capable of producing a compact nuclear warhead and putting it atop a long-range missile.

In response, Pyongyang warned of preemptive strikes against the U.S. military base of Guam in the Pacific.

North Korea responded by saying it is considering a preemptive missile strike against Guam. While the State Department meant to resolve the situation through diplomacy, Mattis suggested that the overwhelming capabilities of the USA military and its allies would demolish North Korea.

He tweeted: "My first order as President was to renovate and modernize our nuclear arsenal". They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen.

The threat from North Korea's nuclear and missile programs has been a top foreign policy priority for Trump since taking office in January, but the dangers posed by North Korea have taken center stage since the country test-fired two intercontinental ballistic missiles last month.

The U.S. aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan is forward deployed in Yokosuka, Japan, which is home to the American Navy's largest fleet presence outside of the United States.

"I think Americans should sleep well at night, have no concerns about this particular rhetoric of the last few days", he told reporters on a flight to Guam, where he was to refuel, according to a transcript released by his department.

"The United States and our allies have the demonstrated capabilities and unquestionable commitment to defend ourselves from attack".
