Visit of External Affairs Minister to Nepal to attend the BIMSTEC Foreign Ministerial Meeting (August 10-11, 2017)

Nepal Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba said today his country "unreservedly" condemns terrorism in all its forms as he called for greater regional connectivity and integration for the collective prosperity.

Deuba will inaugurate the ministerial meeting on Thursday evening which will be attended by the Foreign Ministers of Nepal, India, Bangladesh and Bhutan.

Addressing the 15th ministerial meeting of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation in Kathmandu, Deuba said the BIMSTEC region, like any other region of the world, has not been immune to the dangers of terrors and threats of destruction and damages.

Sushma Swaraj's meeting with Deuba comes ahead of the latter's visit to India from August 23, his first foreign visit since assuming office in June.

Sushma Swaraj, according to Bhattarai, told Deuba that India is all set to welcome Deuba in New Delhi.

Swaraj's visit to Nepal comes as India is pushing for a larger role for BIMSTEC, an global organisation involving a group of countries in South and South East Asia.

Even some agreements reached in 2002 are yet to be implemented, so the prime minister was of the view that he would focus on expediting the implementation of past accords during his visit to India, said Bhattarai. Various issues are likely to be discussed in the meeting. There is now a shared understanding that both sides will take ties to new heights.

"We are committed to timely completion of old and important projects undertaken by us", Swaraj conveyed to PM Deuba.

Swaraj's visit to Nepal this time is the first high level visit from India since Deuba assumed office.

There was no communication whether Sushma Swaraj raised the Doklam issue with Deuba. Both sides agreed that there are vast possibilities for cooperation in infrastructure, connectivity and energy. Details of the 10-minute-long meeting, however, were not made public.
