The automakers announced the joint venture on Friday, saying they hadn't settled on a location for the plant that will produce Toyota Corolla cars and new cross-over models for Mazda.

Bevin was speaking at the Automotive Industry Association's annual conference in Lexington.

WDRB reported that one possible site is off Interstate 65 near Elizabethtown.

Toyota plans to build its Corolla compact auto for the North American market while Mazda would use the plant to build crossover vehicles that combine features of passenger cars and sport-utility vehicles. That factory could also build sport utility vehicles, a Toyota spokesman in Mexico said last week. According to Bevin, he has a personal relationship with Toyota president Akio Toyoda.

But The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday said the Palmetto States is among those in the running for the plant that would employ up to 4,000 workers and build about 300,000 cars per year. Toyota plans to assemble only Tacomas at the Mexican plant.

After Foxconn settled in Wisconsin, and may do some business in MI, the news from Toyota and Mazda has many states clamoring for the automotive business.

"It doesn't bother me to tell people who are going full at it, because I suspect other credible players will be going full at it".

According to USA Today, Toyota also announced that it will move production of the Toyota Corolla to the US plant, instead of Mexico as previously intended.
