Transgender Troop Ban Is a 'Great Favor' for the Military, Trump Says

"It's been a very complicated issue for the military, it's been a very confusing issue for the military, and I think I'm doing the military a great favor", Trump said, according to The Blaze.

Trump also assured that he has "great respect" for the transgender community.

President Trump previously cited the "tremendous medical costs" of providing adequate care as justification for the ban, as well as the idea that transgender people suffering from or receiving medical care for gender dysphoria become undeployable, which hurts military readiness.

"I think I have support, or I've had great support, from that community".

Trump had tweeted the ban on July 26 sending military leaders and LGBTQ advocates in a tizzy.

The Commandant of the Coast Guard, however, has said he won't "break faith" with service members and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph Dunford has said the current policy would remain in effect until Trump's tweets become actual policy. "And I think I'm doing a lot of people a favor by coming out and just saying it".

Unlike some prior reports that estimate the number of transgender troops to be around 15,500, the Naval professors' report estimates there are 12,800 transgender service members now serving.

"Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and can not be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail".

The Obama administration ended the ban on transgender service members in 2016, and many have come out and serve openly.

The Associated Press reported last week that a number of military lawyers have been assembled to work with the White House to "flesh out some of the issues" associated with Trump's desired transgender ban.

The Rand Corp. study also estimated that medical treatments for transgender troops would cost up to a maximum of $8.4 million per year, or 0.01 percent of the USA military's annual budget for medical provisions, The Washington Post reports.

Five active duty transgender service members filed the first lawsuit Wednesday against President Donald Trump's directive - expressed on Twitter - to prohibit transgender individuals from serving in the armed forces.
