Trump Offers Putin Thanks, Not Critique, for Throwing Out US Diplomats

President Donald Trump on Thursday said he was "very thankful" to Russian President Vladimir Putin for Putin's order that the USA diplomatic mission in Russia cut its staff by 755 people. "I'm very thankful that he let go of a large number of people because now we have a smaller payroll", he concluded.

"There's no real reason for them to go back", Trump said.

Meanwhile, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has embarked on a wholesale review of State Department operations aimed at cutting costs and refocusing on new objectives.

It was unclear whether Trump was joking.

The display happened almost a week after it was announced that special counsel Robert Mueller impaneled a grand jury in the FBI's investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 United States presidential election and its possible ties to the Trump campaign.

To anyone with a brain, Putin's move was clearly meant as a not-so-subtle "fuck you" in response to the tougher sanctions the USA government just voted to impose on Russian Federation.

On August 10, Trump was asked what he thought about Putin's decision to to reduce the American diplomatic staff in Russian Federation by 755 employees.

Numerous job cuts that happen as a result of Putin's directive will likely be Russian staffers.

Trump reluctantly signed the sanctions into law, arguing they infringed on his presidential powers. Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan told reporters on Tuesday that this will be a hard undertaking.
