Trump returns to the attack on North Korea with fresh threats

Courtney Kube, NBC News national security and military reporter, talks with Rachel Maddow about whether Donald Trump is seriously considering privatizing the war in Afghanistan, and whether Trump's bluster on North Korea has any basis in strategy.

"The words were his own", said Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

Earlier in the day Thursday, the liberal mainstream media attempted to suggest the Trump administration is sending mixed messages about North Korea. The president alone has the authority to launch nuclear weapons, the only restraint being the advice of senior advisors who might be present at the time of crisis, and Donald Trump has shown repeated contempt for informed and wise counsel. But she added that "the tone and strength of the message were discussed beforehand" with advisers, including new chief of staff John Kelly.

The president's fiery rhetoric came as tensions mounted between the USA and North Korea. He endorsed Democrat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election.

Humphrey, who has been an outspoken critic of Trump, called for Trump to be "relieved of the powers of the presidency" as soon as possible.

The escalating threats followed reports that North Korea has mastered a crucial technology needed to strike the United States with a nuclear missile. The UN Security Council this weekend adopted new, tougher sanctions, seeking to curtail North Korea's nuclear ambitions.

Administration spokespeople tried to assure the public that Trump's apocalyptic "fire and fury" language was improvised and, as US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said, Americans should not be concerned about the worsening rhetoric from both sides.

"Over the past couple days, President Trump has taken one of this world's gravest threats - nuclear conflict - and treated it in a way that is both reckless and needless", said Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH).

And as awful as that appears, it leads to the other part of Team Trump's latest message, which is subtler, but just as dejecting.
