It's more-or-less official: President Trump is declaring the opioid crisis a national emergency.

By declaring it a national emergency it removes some barriers and waives some federal rules such as one that restricts Medicaid recipients from receiving addiction treatment.

Gov. Rick Scott declared a state of emergency over the opioid crisis in May, funneling $27 million in federal funding to combat abuse in the state. It is hard to predict other effects of a federal declaration. But Tom Price, the Health and Human Services secretary, said Tuesday that he didn't think it is needed.

According to data from the Missouri Hospital Association, opioid-related inpatient hospital admissions and emergency room visits have more than doubled over the past decade.

"The time to take action against opioid abuse is now", he said in a statement. Heroin and opioids accounted for the majority of those deaths.

Jim Hood, CEO and co-founder of the Connecticut-based organization, Facing Addiction, said not only was he disappointed with the president's decision, he was also a bit puzzled. "You know, when I was growing up, they had the LSD, and they had certain generations of drugs".

Or it at least it will be once the paperwork gets done, President Trump said Thursday.

Following a briefing on the epidemic earlier this week and recommendations in interim report from a presidential commission on the national drug crisis, President Donald Trump told reporters Thursday the emergency paperwork is being drawn up now. That's what I think we should focus on.

The announcement comes as states and local governments have struggled with this crisis.

A recent report from the Christie-led commission equated the 142 deaths each day from drug overdoses to the death toll of "September 11th every three weeks". "They're looking for how they can get their products out, they're spreading all over the country, they're in every community". From the year 2000 to 2015, 500,000 people died due to drug overdoses and opioid use is the main reason.

"Since the early 1990s we've used the NY channel as a way of communicating with Pyongyang because we don't have diplomatic relations with North Koreans", said Joel Wit, a former State Department employee and the founder of 38 North, a website for expert analysis on North Korea.
