United Nations resumes humanitarian activities in Borno

Nigeria's security forces have raided a United Nations camp in the north-eastern city of Maiduguri and carried out an unauthorised search, a United Nations official has told the BBC.

"In their conversation, Shettima reassured the DSG of his government's commitment to safeguarding humanitarian workers and ensuring that global protocol was restored by all security agencies", the statement said.

" I am very pleased to report that our relationship of collaboration and trust is intact, and at this stage, we are focused on the work ahead to ensure that the millions of vulnerable people in the Northeast are supported with life-saving humanitarian aid".

"I reiterated that we are here in support of the government of Nigeria, the United Nations agencies and over 60 development organisations working to provide the much-needed food, shelter, safe water, latrines and medicines".

The eight-year insurgency has driven at least 2 million people from their homes and nearly 7 million need humanitarian assistance.

The Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Major Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, on is part, described the United Nations as one of its strongest and worthy allies in the counter insurgency fight against Boko Haram.

According to him, the restructuring of the army's operations in the North-east in 2015 yielded fruitful results. This necessitated the need to intensify cordon and search in Maiduguri metropolis and environment.

"It therefore became expedient to take preemptive action by combing the general area through a cordon and search operations".

"One of such included a property which was said to be occupied by United Nations Staff, although the property did not carry a UN designation".

The Nigerian military, which claimed there was no sign it was a United Nations camp, issued a statement on Friday calling its "operation" a success but added that no suspect was found.

"The command wishes to assure the general public that these operations are being conducted to safeguard lives and properties but not targeted at any individual or group".

The raid could add tension to the relationship between the two institutions as each struggles to respond to an eight-year-old war with Boko Haram. Tens of thousands live on the brink of starvation and millions more lack secure access to food.
