The man accused in the bludgeoning deaths of his mother, sister and a third woman was ordered held without bail following a court appearance Sunday.

The casualties were distinguished as his mom, Lynn Reichenbach-Vanderhall, sister, Melissa Vanderhall and a family colleague, Janel Simpson.

Police say Vanderhall had a history of emotional problems.

Bobby Vanderhall, 34, allegedly entered his mother's Hempstead home through the basement door at approximately 1:15 a.m. Saturday, Nassau County police confirmed in a statement to PEOPLE.

Nassau County police say Bobby Vanderhall was captured Saturday following the early morning slayings.

Vanderhall allegedly bludgeoned another one of his sister's friends - 29-year-old Candace Murray - but she managed to fight back and escape the home.

"His behavior became more unruly, more violent", said Fitzpatrick, as reported by the New York Daily News.

"The girls, who were all upstairs, heard what was going on in the living room", Fitzpatrick said, according to the paper.

"The doors were secured and he became enraged", added Fitzpatrick. "With this framing hammer he broke through the basement door into the residence".

Cops found him sleeping in a parked vehicle about 2 miles from the murder scene.

Neighbour Earl Sykes, 38, was driving home from a movie when he saw the fourth victim running barefoot and screaming for help.

Police also told journalists that the three women died from "blunt force trauma".

He was charged with three counts of second-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.

Friends said his mother endured chilling run-ins with her son, which they described as out-of-control.

She jumped on the hood of his auto saying, 'He's trying to kill us!

Vanderhall's criminal record included arrests for DWI and another for sexual abuse.

Denis Simpson, Janel's father, said she had gone to her friend's house after working late as a secretary at Northwell Health, NBC reported.
