US Mum To Sue Hospital After Newborn Suffocates

Oregon mother who mistakenly suffocated newborn sues hospital for $8.6 million

A nurse took the newborn to his mother for breast-feeding and put the child next to her in her hospital bed at Adventist Medical Center in Portland, Ore.

"In court documents her laywer recounts the tragic accident explaining: "[The nurse] put Jacob next to his mother in her bed so that she could breastfeed him. The suit alleges a nurse at Portland (Ore.) Adventist Medical Center took Ms. Thompson's baby, Jacob, from the hospital's nursery to Ms. Thompson's room for breastfeeding around 3 a.m. on August 6, 2012.

However, she fell asleep with her baby next to her and accidentally suffocated him.

"She called for a nurse while she tried to get him to respond", the suit says. In her legal filing, Thompson said the hospital was negligent for giving her the baby to breastfeed while she was taking such strong pain medications and also for leaving them alone while she was in such a groggy condition, Oregon Live reports.

Ms Thompson claims the hospital has "directly caused her severe emotional distress, severe depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, severe anxiety and prolonged grief disorder".

The American Academy of Pediatrics says babies should never share a bed with parents, and no pillows, sheets, blankets or other items should be in a baby's bed. Unless of course, Thompson wasn't on the narcotics and sedatives she claimed she was or the hospital egregiously erred by allowing her to breastfeed under the influence in the first place? She said they were unable to provide any additional information at the time.

Kristi Spurgeon Johnson, a spokeswoman for Portland Adventist Medical Center, told The Oregonian this week the hospital could not comment on the lawsuit until the hospital had a chance to review it.

Adding, 'My firstborn and only son.

Thompson, who is suing both the hospital and the individual nurse involved in the incident, said she was "still drowsy and groggy" from her medication when she realized her son was not moving, her lawsuit states.

He died six days later. "I am sharing our story in the hopes that no mother or family will ever have to suffer through a preventable tragedy such as this", the Thompson family said in a statement. He was born by Caesarean section on August 2, 2012, according to the suit.

In addition to accusing it of negligence, she is also suing the hospital on her son's behalf.

They also recommend placing babies in the same room where the parents sleep but not the same bed, breastfeeding as much and as for long as mothers can (reduces risks of SIDS), keeping babies away from smokers and places where people smoke, and keeping the baby at comfortable temperatures as hot temperatures increase the risk of SIDS.
