Guam stays calm dismisses North Korea threat

The small USA territory of Guam has become a focal point after North Korea's army threatened to use ballistic missiles to create an "enveloping fire" around the island. However, the most recent launch tests have shown that Pyongyang has missiles that can travel over 7,400 miles. The U.S. territory is home to Andersen Air Force Base.

Japan had said on Tuesday it was possible that North Korea had already developed nuclear warheads and warned of an acute threat posed by its weapons programmes as Pyongyang's continues missile and nuclear tests in defiance of United Nations sanctions.

North Korea describes the Pukguksong-2 as a "medium-to-long range strategic missile, " the same term it uses for the intermediate range Hwasong-12, and some South Korean experts see the missile as potentially capable of reaching Guam. Such a launch would nearly compel the United States to attempt an intercept and possibly generate further escalation.

Investors aren't freaking out about North Korea, but there was a noticeable shift in sentiment nonetheless. He adds, "Inflammatory rhetoric on both sides will make that more likely".

USA stocks clawed back losses late on Wednesday as investors appeared to brush off geopolitical concerns after falling in the wake of President Donald Trump's "fire and fury" warning to North Korea.

But are investors really nervous about a possible military conflict with Kim Jong Un?

"We keep closely watching the speech and behavior of the USA", it said. The move added to escalating U.S.

A Japanese defence paper and a US media report Tuesday said North Korea may have successfully produced a miniaturized nuclear warhead that can fit inside its missiles.

Because Guam is a USA territory, the US military may launch forces from there without worrying about upsetting a host nation that may object to US actions.

Guam lies about 2,100 miles (3,400 kilometers) from the Korean Peninsula, and it's extremely unlikely Kim's government would risk annihilation with a pre-emptive attack on US citizens.

"The war of words taking place between the United States and North Korea at the moment, which includes very real threats of action, is taking its toll on investor sentiment".

After North Korea's initial threat against Guam, the territory's Homeland Security Advisor George Charfauros told CNN he was confident of their defense systems. The country plans to fly four missiles over Japan and land them 30-40km from Guam. It can be fired from mobile launchers, making it hard to detect and destroy on the ground. Residents do not pay US income taxes or vote in the general election for president, but they are USA citizens by birth.

Washington, meanwhile, has been giving out mixed signals about its intentions.

Analysts pointed to the harsh threats and sabre rattling from US President Donald Trump, including a message Wednesday on Twitter boasting that the US nuclear arsenal was now "more powerful than ever before".

"The overnight Korean news has prompted some unwinding of the cheapening trades on the franc that has been going on for some time and though positioning is not stretched by any means, the franc's strength may have room to run", said Timothy Graf, head of macro strategy at State Street Global Markets in London. "Nothing that I have seen and nothing that I know of would indicate that the situation has dramatically changed in the last 24 hours".
