The price of gold also surged for the second day in a row as the December bullion contract advanced US$10.80 to US$1,290.10 an ounce. Pyongyang said it was examining plans for attacking Guam, a US territory in the Pacific that has a USA military base.

Separately, U.S. producer prices unexpectedly fell in July, recording their biggest drop in almost a year, weighed down by declining costs for services and energy products.

Kohl's stock dropped almost six percent despite better than expected earnings.

Markets are now focused on US consumer price data for July, due later in the session.

The market's main backstop in times of strain, gold, hit a two-month high of $1,282 an ounce amid the nervousness.

ASIA'S DAY: Tokyo's Nikkei 225 tumbled 1.3 per cent to 19,738.71 and Seoul's Kospi fell 1.1 per cent to 2,368.39.

USA crude oil crude futures edged up 10 cents to $48.69 per barrel. Viacom slid 93 cents, or 3 percent, to $29.84. United States gold futures for December delivery rose 0.3 per cent to $1,294.10 per ounce. It is poised to end the week down 1.7 percent.
