Walmart Apologizes For 'Terrible' 'Own The School Year' Sign Above Guns

The sign appears to be part of an ongoing superhero-themed marketing campaign that is not related to guns.

"Own the school year like a hero", the display said. The photo went viral on social media on Wednesday, prompting a flurry of shocked and angry responses.

Walmart subsequently said the sign had been removed from the display.

"What are you suggesting", wrote user @ZijZ.

It's back-to-school season, which means young people are getting outfitted and stocking up on supplies for the new academic year. "Right, #BetsyDevos?" another said.

Walmart initially claimed to have identified the store location but a company spokesman told CNN Money that it was a mistake, and that the company is still searching for the sign. "We are very sorry", it said to another.

A spokesperson told CNNMoney that Walmart was "not happy" with what happened at the location in Evansville, Indiana - and that they were "working diligently" to find out who was responsible.

"This REALLY isn't acceptable". The retail giant is now attempting to track down where the incident actually occurred - not an easy task, since Wal-Mart has 4,000 supermarkets across the United States. We regret this situation and are looking into how it could have happened. Last September in Florida's Panama City Beach, a Walmart store attempted to commemorate the anniversary of September 11 by stacking Coca-Cola boxes into the shape of the World Trade Center buildings.
