Tanya Tucker on Glen Campbell: 'I'll Forever Love You, Glen'

At first it seemed unusual that the death of Glen Campbell from Alzheimer's disease, an insidious illness that first robbed him of his memory and then his life, should inspire my mind to flood with memories. Whether singing of lost-love (By the Time I Get to Phoenix) or about a soldier at war (Galveston) or of lost youth (The Dreams of the Everyday Housewife), Glen Campbell's songs (many written by Jimmy Webb) spoke to the human condition.

One of 12 children, Campbell left his native Arkansas and a life of farm work as a teenager in pursuit of music. Musically, he was arguably as good as Eric Clapton on the guitar.

There he performed as a session musician with Phil Spector's legendary backing band known as The Wrecking Crew helping to produce what was called the Wall of Sound. It says Campbell was laid to rest on Wednesday in a private ceremony and that there will be a private memorial, but the date has not been announced. If producers were looking for great musical hooks, and near flawless playing, they'd hire the Wrecking Crew.

"Mayer played an acoustic version of Campbell's 'Gentle On My Mind", introducing the hit as his 'favorite song in the world". He was also a movie star, joining John Wayne in classic Western "True Grit".

Campbell, who also hosted music and comedy shows on TV, saw his career go up further in the 1970s with hits like "Rhinestone Cowboy", "Southern Nights" (both US No.1 hits), and "Country Boy (You Got Your Feet in L.A.)" but also picked up an alcohol and drug addiction and a string of divorces and affairs. He later pleaded guilty to "extreme" DUI and leaving the scene of an accident and served a 10-day sentence. She shared the photo shortly after news broke of Campbell's passing, which came following his diagnosis with Alzheimer's disease in 2011. His last performance was in Napa, California on November 2012 and was moved to long-term care and treatment center before the spring of 2014. "I'll forever love you, Glen".
