West Ham United has reportedly placed a club transfer record bid of £27.1 million (€30 million) to Sporting Lisbon for midfielder William Carvalho.

The Portugal global midfielder has been linked to Premier League sides Arsenal and Manchester United in the past, but sources tell Goal that West Ham are optimistic a deal will get done.

Sporting are attempting to hold out for €40m (£36.1m) but are aware that the 25-year-old is keen to finally move to the Premier League club.

Tottenham and Crystal Palace are rumoured to be interested in snapping him up, but it is London rivals West Ham who are believed to be making all the running.

The Angola-born powerhouse has amassed 37 caps for his country, winning Euro 2016, and is eager to move to the Premier League with London offering an even greater attraction.

West Ham have already added creativity to their ranks in the form of Javier Hernandez and Marko Arnautovic and are now looking for a defensive midfielder to shield what, at times, has been a brittle backline.

West Ham have a number of options in the heart of their team, with the likes of Pedro Obiang, Mark Noble and Cheikhou Kouyate in the mix for Slaven Bilic to select. Robert Snodgrass and Sofiane Feghouli look like likely candidates to be on the way out of the club.
