There have not been any human or other animal cases reported in Grant County this year, however, detection of WNV in the mosquito population means there is a potential for the spread of the virus to humans and other vulnerable species.

The first confirmed human case in IL in 2017 was a man in his 60s from southwest suburban Will County, diagnosed in late June.

Director of Health Phylis Ellis says ongoing testing of mosquitoes at 9 trap sites around Oneida County have returned no positive tests for West Nile Virus. About one in five people who are infected with the virus will develop symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea or rash, Health Department officials said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says West Nile virus can cause febrile illness, encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord).

Infected horses may display symptoms including head tilt, muscle tremors, stumbling, lack of coordination, weakness of the limbs or partial paralysis.

So far this year there have been 10 confirmed cases in birds, and 607 positive mosquito batches, with 41 counties reporting one form of positive test or the other.

Hancock Public Health recommends eliminating standing water, limiting outside activities during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active, using insect repellent containing DEET and wearing loose, light-colored clothing. "During July-September, arboviral transmission of West Nile Virus increases dramatically".

Vaccines in horses have proven to be a very effective prevention tool. The risk of West Nile virus remains until the first hard frost, according to the release. Stagnant backyard pools can be a big source of mosquitoes and should be maintained regularly to prevent mosquito growth.
