Live Election Results: Republican Primary in Utah's Third Congressional District

The Republican primary for the special election in Utah to fill the House of Representatives seat vacated by Republican Jason Chaffetz's retirement ends tonight.

Curtis was ahead with a 41 percent plurality in early returns, outpacing former state lawmaker Chris Herrod and lawyer Tanner Ainge, who both polled around 30 percent with around 77 percent of votes counted. Herrod was trailing with about 31 percent, and Ainge called Curtis to concede the race even before Curtis was declared the victor. Thousands more votes remain to be counted.

You work out the math and Herrod would have to catch up to Curtis (with Ainge getting no more votes at all) and then win 50 percent plus 1 of the rest.

Out-of-state organizations and political action committees have spent about $900,000 in Utah's race - on top of about $600,000 in campaign contributions collected by the three Republicans running for Utah's 3rd Congressional District.

There are three leading candidates in the primary, who vie to face the Democratic nominee for Utah's 3 Congressional District in the general.

Chaffetz, who gave up his post as House Oversight and Government Reform Committee chairman when he retired and now serves as a Fox News Channel commentator, did not make an endorsement in the race for his successor.

Utah's 3rd Congressional District spans from Salt Lake County to San Juan County in the state's southeast corner, and includes portions of Utah, Carbon, Emery, Grand and Wasatch counties.

"It works really well", Curtis said in a video posted to YouTube.

The Associated Press called the race for Curtis at approximately 9:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Curtis will face Democratic nominee Kathie Allen, a physician selected at a party convention, as well as Jim Bennett, the son of the late GOP senator Robert F. Bennett, who is among several third-party candidates running in the November 7 general election.

November 7: The special election to succeed Chaffetz, with the victor serving out the remainder of the term until 2018, took place.

The victor coming out of Tuesday's race will face a well-funded Democratic opponent who initially jumped in to challenge Chaffetz earlier this year.

Polls showed that Curtis had an early lead in the race that attack ads were unable to overcome. Robert Bennett (R-Utah), in the November special election. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, by a wide margin. The ads also highlighted his run for the state legislature in 2000 as a Democrat. But the mail ballots in question were segregated and were set to be counted only after all other ballots were counted. Unaffiliated ballots were incorrectly sent to 68,000 Utah County voters with an option to vote in the Republican primary, causing many voters to cast their ballots provisionally.

Curtis will face a well-funded Democratic opponent who initially jumped in to challenge Chaffetz earlier this year. Voter turnout was 33 percent during last year's GOP primary.
