Why you should never put your feet on the dashboard

Audra Tatum's injury

Audra Tatum's injury

"My husband would tell me, 'If we have a wreck it's going to break your leg.' I dismissed him", she told WTVC.

"I keep telling everybody, you don't want this life".

Doctors at the hospital who treated Tatum told her that if she had been sitting normally, with her two feet on the ground, she would have been completely fine.

But on August 2, 2015, all that changed when Tatum and her husband T-boned another vehicle on their way to pick up their two son's from her parents' house.

Everyone was able to walk away from the accident with scrapes and bruises - except for Audra.

"I was looking at the bottom of my foot facing up at me".

Not only did the airbag blast her leg backward into her face, but she sustained massive bone breaks of her shoulder, her ankle, femur, and nose, not to mention muscle and tendon tears.

"Basically my whole right side was broken, and it's simply because of my ignorance".

Tatum isn't alone in her trauma either.

The gruesome injury caused her to lose her job, necessitated multiple surgeries, and forced her into two years of rehab that still isn't done.

Catherine Morales: Thank you for sharing, I took this to heart and made it a lesson to share with my daughter.

Because of her experience, Tatum says she has a serious message for everyone who thinks it is comfortable to put their feet on the dashboard.

Now, she wants others to make sure they don't make the same mistake she did. Every hour of every day because every time I put pressure on my leg I feel it, she said.

"I regret it every single day".

We're officially in the dog days of summer, when there's really nothing better than taking a auto ride with the music turned up real loud, the windows rolled all the way down, and your feet resting on the dashboard.

In a Facebook post, the department said that airbags deploy at speeds between 100 and 220 miles per hour.

Tatum also wasn't wearing a seatbelt.

"It could have done so much more damage", she said.

But alas, many people have indeed had to suffer such consequences. "If I can save one person from doing this and they're not going through it, that would be wonderful".
