Pliskova will need to have her serve firing on all cylinders when she meets sixth seed and former world number one Caroline Wozniacki in the last eight.

The Czech star advanced to the quarterfinals when Japanese qualifier Naomi Osaka retired with an abdominal injury in the third set with Pliskova leading 6-2, 6-7 (4) 1-0.

After Radwanska took a 2-1 lead in the first set, Wozniacki reeled off four straight games to take control.

No.2 seed Halep needed just 58 minutes to secure the 6-1, 6-0 victory, looking completely in control of the match from start to finish.

Osaka had to withdraw from events in Prague and Madrid with the same injury.

She admitted however that she faces a tough challenge holding on to her world number one ranking.

American Venus Williams, playing in her first tournament since reaching the final at Wimbledon, again had to battle to advance as she defeated 21-year-old Katerina Siniakova 7-5 7-5.

"I was trying to be there in the right moment, move quick, look for the ball and play as deep as I could to make her feel uncomfortable".

"I was not really thinking about this", she said.

The seven-time Grand Slam victor Williams made 21 unforced errors to just 10 for Svitolina.

Stephens stepped up her game against Kerber after a couple of long three set wins against Yulia Putintseva and Petra Kvitova in the first two rounds. "I'm definitely happy that I'm through to the next round".

On Monday, Stephens recorded her first tournament match win since a second-round victory at Wimbledon in 2016.

"The same thing today, I just really went out and played my game".

Meanwhile, fourth-ranked Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza tamed Belgian qualifier Kirsten Flipkens 7-5, 6-2, while second seed Simona Halep defeated Wimbledon semi-finalist Magdalena Rybarikova 6-3, 6-4.

Czech Lucie Safarova also made the last eight by outlasting Russia's Ekaterina Makarova 6-3 6-7 (3) 6-2, while France's Caroline Garcia beat 18-year-old American Catherine Bellis 6-4 6-2.

Ekaterina Makarova of Russian Federation knocked off seventh-seeded Konta 5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-3; Czech Lucie Safarova scored a 6-2, 6-4 victory over 11th-seeded Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia 6-2, 6-4; and Sloane Stephens of the United States pulled off her second straight impressive victory, ousting 14th-seeded Czech Petra Kvitova 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-2.
