North Korean leader Kim Jong-un ratcheted up his harsh rhetoric against the U.S. and allies by issuing a rare direct statement on Friday, which experts here interpreted as an "eye for an eye" tactic against his USA counterpart Donald Trump.

Trump responded with a tweet calling Kim Jong-un "a madman" who "will be tested like never before!" "Whatever Trump might have expected, he will face results beyond his expectation", Kim said, adding that he would "tame" Trump "with fire".

The warning was delivered by North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho in NY, according to comments published by South Korea's Yonhap news agency. In addition to implying that Trump is a "frightened dog" (and it's hard to disagree with him on that front), Jong-un said, "I will surely and definitely tame the mentally deranged USA dotard with fire".

Trump invented the term Rocket Man to describe Kim Jong Un after a series of missile and nuclear tests by North Korea under his watch.

Tillerson says American diplomatic efforts "continue unabated" to try to bring Kim's government to the negotiating table. "Once we can assess the nature of this threat, the President will make a decision regarding the appropriate actions". Trump has said he won't allow it, although the U.S.so far has not used military force to impede the North's progress.

However, Kim's foreign minister, Ri Yong Ho, said North Korea could consider a hydrogen bomb test of an unprecedented scale over the Pacific Ocean.

Thornton declined, however, to specify what the US would do.

As Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un volley insults at each other across the Pacific, Merriam-Webster's Twitter account dutifully stands by to translate for the rest of the world. Trump announced the measures on Thursday as he met leaders from South Korea and Japan, the nations most immediately imperilled by North Korea's threats of a military strike.

On Tuesday, Trump called Kim a "rocket man on a suicide mission" and claimed the USA could "totally destroy" the rogue regime, in his maiden speech addressing the United Nations assembly.

Kim used the word to describe Trump in an eviscerating response to the president's September 19 United Nations address, which personally attacked Kim and threatened to "totally destroy" North Korea.

China's central bank has also reportedly ordered the country's financial institutions to stop doing business with North Korea, an action Trump called "a tremendous move" that was "somewhat unexpected". North Korea recently claimed that is close to achieving its nuclear goals, despite worldwide pressure to rein in the aggressive little country.

The executive order Trump inked just ahead of the lunch enhances Treasury Department authorities to target individuals who provide goods, services or technology to North Korea, Trump said.

If North Korea conducted its test successfully, tensions would escalate dramatically, he told the South China Morning Post in an email.
