COPS have stormed a hospital in America following reports of an "active" gunman.

Hospital employees received an alert warning them of an active shooter in the level 4 south intensive care unit and told them to shelter in place, the Valley News of Lebanon reports.

Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, in the United States city of Lebanon, is being evacuated after an "active shooter alert" was issued by police. Several social media reports indicate one person has been shot.

An unofficial source inside the hospital confirmed that there was an active shooting alert issued, but no confirmation as yet as to what the actual situation is.

Workers received an email from the hospital for a "code silver", which means employees need to get out of the hospital if possible or if they can not leave, then they should shelter in place. People were told to avoid the area, and traffic was stopped on a route leading to the hospital. Lebanon Police and New Hampshire State police were on the scene.

Lebanon police said it was a "fluid scene". Lebanon High School and Hanover Street Elementary School are about two miles from the hospital.
