Audi has released a short video teasing a rear-wheel drive version of its R8 supercar, which is expected to debut at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show this week.

Is Audi really going to offer the R8 without its signature quattro all-wheel drive? The company has shared a video of a new variant of the R8, likely to be the R8 Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) variant. This may sound odd at first, but Audi Sport points out that the GT-spec R8 race cars are rear-wheel drive only. A roadgoing homage to the R8 GT3 and GT4, the R8 RWS is the auto that was alluded to months ago by former Lamborghini CEO and current Audi Sport boss Stephan Winkelmann. It is strictly limited to 999 units in both Coupe and Spyder varients. It will come fitted with Audi's 5.2 litre V10 FSI engine delivering 540 hp and peak torque of 540 Nm. The ESC only intervenes on the limit.

One of the most anticipated cars right now is the next Audi R8 V10 and it is easy to understand why. The grille has a matte black finish, the front and rear air ducts are matte black, and the coupe's upper sideblade is gloss black while the lower blade is body color. The addition of the propshaft, multi-plate clutch and center differential make the difference in the quattro equipped cars. Like the R8 LMS GT 4, the engineering of which likely made this vehicle possible, buyers can opt for unique red graphics running over the hood, roof, and rear end.

Until now. Audi Sport GmbH, the division formerly known as quattro, has created this, the R8 RWS. They feature a five-spoke V-design and come fitted with 245/35 tires up front and 295/35 at the rear.

Inside, the sport seats are upholstered in leather and Alcantara, and the dash has a "1 of 999" emblem. The coupe starts at 140,000 euros, the Spyder at 153,000 euros.
