The source of such (scandalous) rumors is Audi itself, which posted a video on its Instagram page showing a red-striped R8 painting the pavement in a way only a rear-wheel-drive auto can.

Winkelmann wasn't kidding when he said Audi Sport would be looking into a rear-wheel drive auto.

If you need assistance in spotting one of the €140,000 R8 RWS coupes, or €153,000 spyders you'll need to look for the matt black grille and air apertures at the front and rear of the auto. Eschewing the quattro four-wheel drive system of the standard model the limited edition model is set-up similar to the R8 LMS race vehicle.

And exclusive is the name of the game: although Audi will offer the R8 RWS in coupe and convertible Spyder forms, just 999 cars will be built in total. Currently, every performance Audi comes with some variant of quattro.

Removing the propshaft and drive system from the front axle saves 50kg, providing the coupé version of Audi Sport's R8 V10 RWS with a kerb weight of 1590kg and a corresponding power-to-weight ratio of 340hp per tonne. A revised chassis set-up and control systems allow drivers to perform "controlled drifts" when in the "Dynamic" driving mode and with the electric stabilisation control system set to "Sport". While the electromechanical power steering is completely free of torque steer for a precise handling.

The special edition will go on sale in Europe from September 15, with prices in the United Kingdom kicking off from £110,000 OTR. The RWD R8 gets black-finished 19-inch aluminum wheels in a five-spoke V-design with 245/35 section tires up front and 295/35 out back.

Only 999 units of the Audi R8 RWS will be produced. The interior is upholstered in special leather and Alcantara and optional sport seats are available.

There will only be 999 R8 RWS Coupes and Spyders built, with deliveries starting to the U.S. in 2018. The coupe starts at 140,000 euros, the Spyder at 153,000 euros.

We're not entirely sure if a rear-wheel drive Audi will ever work in practice of if it's just wrong.

All this, hopefully you will agree, sounds like very good news for the Audi R8 range.

This is the first Audi R8 road vehicle with rear-wheel drive and the only performance Audi now available that sends power to just two wheels.
