He added that Burma was "transporting rations for displaced people for emergency assistance" to areas close to the border and that Bangladesh "needs to understand that as well".

Rights monitors and fleeing Rohingya say the army and Rakhine Buddhist vigilantes have mounted a campaign of arson aimed at driving out the Muslim population.

Most Rohingya, who spent more than a week trekking cross-country from Rakhine to reach the Bangladesh border, have found existing camps overflowing and have instead settled on muddy roadsides. Those fleeing have described indiscriminate attacks by security forces and Buddhist mobs.

Mr Kunal said that human rights bodies had also condemned Myanmarese government on several occasions for persecution of Rohingya Muslims in the country.

Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein, the United Nations high commissioner for human rights, said the military's "brutal" security campaign was in clear violation of global law, and cited what he called refugees' consistent accounts of widespread extrajudicial killings, rape and other atrocities. Myanmar has insisted that Rohingya insurgents and fleeing villagers are destroying their own homes.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday reiterated his call for Muslims from Myanmar's Rakhine state to be granted nationality or at least a legal status that would allow them to lead a normal life. Abdus Salam, the top government administrator in the Cox's Bazar district hospital, said that some 150,000 children would be immunized over seven days for measles, rubella and polio.

"They have taken away two of my nephews, and they have taken away children from so many other people and we don't know [their] whereabouts", he said.

Eric P. Schwartz, head of the USA -based charity Refugees International and a former assistant secretary of state for population, refugees and migration, said he couldn't recall seeing so much misery in the camps and called for international pressure on Myanmar to stop the violence.

Women, children, older people and those with disabilities were especially vulnerable, with reports of violence against women on the rise since the start of the humanitarian disaster, Oxfam said.

Myanmar government leader and Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi has faced a barrage of criticism from overseas for not stopping the violence.
