Bangladesh star Shakib Al-Hasan has requested a six-month break from Test cricket. Bangladesh will fly to South Africa later this month for two Tests, three ODIs and T20Is.

"Shakib has formally written to the board with the request for some time off from Test cricket temporarily due to the demands placed on him physically and mentally from playing continuously in recent times", BCB CEO Nizam Uddin Chowdhury said in a statement.

"He said he will be available for other formats during this period but he needed this break from Test cricket to refresh his body". Bangladesh have four Tests scheduled, two each against South Africa and Sri Lanka over the next six months. The 33-Test veteran will certainly add some experience in the line-up in Shakib's absence. "Of course, without him we will be on the back foot, still we have to manage it".

The news comes amid concerns over player fatigue, as well as criticism that players are prioritizing earning money over representing their countries.

Bangladesh secured a notable 1-1 draw at home in their previous Test series, having registered a landmark first victory over heavyweights Australia.

"We included Mahmudullah because he can do well overseas, where the ball comes first on to the bat".

Pace bowler Rubel Hossain and Subashis Roy also returned to the side while the selectors dropped batsman Nasir Hossain.

The BCB recalled all-rounder Mahmudullah in Shakib's absence and dropped Nasir Hossain from the 15-man squad for the series, with the first test to start on September 28 at Senwes Park.
