The acquisition comes amidst much competition between networks over the rights to the book, which is not slated for release until June 2018.

Clinton has written many nonfiction books in the past, but The President Is Missing marks his first novel.

In the book, President Clinton and Patterson tell the startling story of a sitting US president's disappearance, with the level of detail that only someone who has held the office can know - generating a powerful, one-of-a-kind thriller.

This is not the only Clinton content coming to the small screen soon.

The former president said in a statement that he's excited about seeing the project being developed.

In The President Is Missing, published by Alfred A. Knopf and Little, Brown & Co., Clinton and Patterson tell the story of a sitting US president's disappearance, with the level of detail that only someone who has held the office can know. According to one person familiar with the rights negotiations, Clinton and Patterson met with more than a dozen companies, ultimately landing at the CBS Corp-owned Showtime in part because of both men's decades-old respective relationships with CBS Corp. chief Leslie Moonves. Though fictional, the story brings to life the pressures and realities of the most important position in the world.

A fictional USA president has been featured on another Showtime drama, Homeland, whose next season is set in Washington DC.

"I'm really enjoying writing this book and working with Jim", said Clinton.

Clinton expressed his enjoyment of the writing process and excitement over seeing his characters be brought to life by Showtime.

Patterson, who has sold more than 380 million books worldwide during his decades-long career, said Clinton's involvement in the novel provides "rich storytelling opportunities for this series".

On the news, Nevins said, "Bringing The President is Missing to Showtime is a coup of the highest order".
