Rohingya refugees make dangerous voyages to escape Burma violence

Some Rohingyas say although they are afraid to return, they are not ready to abandon their homes altogether and become refugees in Bangladesh.

Aung San Suu Kyi, who won the Nobel Peace Prize for her campaign to bring democracy to the Buddhist-dominated country, serves as foreign minister and is the de facto leader of the government.

This development came days after Bangladesh briefed India about the problems faced by it due to the influx of refugees from Myanmar following the ethnic violence in the Buddhist-majority nation.

But outside of her country Suu Kyi's reputation as a rights defender is in ruins over the Rohingya crisis.

The United Nations appealed on Thursday for massive help for almost 400,000 Muslims from Myanmar who have fled to Bangladesh, with concern growing that the number could keep rising, unless Myanmar ends what critics denounce as "ethnic cleansing".

Guterres repeated his call for "an effective action plan" to address the root causes of the situation, which he said had been left to fester for decades and has now escalated beyond Myanmar's borders, destabilizing the region.

The UN Security Council has condemned the violence and there are now calls for Myanmar's civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi to do the same. "When people fled, they burned the houses with bottles of petrol and rocket launchers", the man told Amnesty. Okoth-Obbo said he appreciates the Bangladeshi government's efforts to welcome the Rohingya, but called for a "comprehensive response".

The crisis and refugee exodus began on August 25, when Rohingya insurgents attacked police posts. Juncker however declined to say whether Suu Kyi should be stripped of the Nobel Peace Prize, an award the European Union itself won in 2012.

"India has always responded readily and swiftly to any crisis in Bangladesh, in keeping with the close ties of friendship between the peoples of India and Bangladesh. Our investigation makes it crystal clear that its own security forces, along with vigilante mobs, are responsible for burning Rohingya homes", said Hassan.

"We don't block any organisations sending aid to those areas but they might have some difficulty travelling where access is restricted by local authorities for security reasons".

"This violence must stop".

Myanmar presidential office spokesman Zaw Htay said that out of 471 "Bengali" villages in three Rakhine townships, 176 were now completely empty while at least 34 more were partially abandoned.
