Car, bike owners can afford petrol, says Union minister

Twitter outraged over Alphons Kannanthanam's statement defending high fuel price

Justifying the hike in petrol and diesel prices, Alphons pointed out that the money collected by taxing people is being used for the welfare of the downtrodden and the poor. "We are going to tax people who can afford to pay".

The money that we receive from the high fuel price would be punched towards the development of the country, the Union Minister had stated on September 15.

Alphons courted controversy when he said while speaking to the press that somebody who can afford a vehicle or scooter is not somebody who is starving. "Lot of people do not have a house", the newly-inducted NDA minister said. "Somebody who can afford to pay has to pay", said Kannanthanam. "We will ensure every village is electrified and toilets and houses are built", Kannanthanam added, reported ANI.

He also alleged that the Central Government is hiking prices of fuel each day only to help corporates involved in petroleum business to make huge profits.

The bureaucrat-turned-politician's comment come at a time when fuel prices are at a three-year high though global crude prices have crashed, attracting criticism from opposition parties which described them as insensitive to the common man's problems. "Even children know that when the price of petrol and diesel is hiked, it will result in increase in prices of essential commodities", Ramesh Chennithala, leader of opposition, retorted. "Numerous ministers in Modi's government are like this".

He said the tax on petroleum products could come down if it was brought under the ambit of GST. "In India 30 per cent of the people are downtrodden and crores of rupees were needed for their welfare", he said.
