Champions League: Pogba sidelined for weeks after hamstring injury against Basle

The Frenchman, named captain for the night by Jose Mourinho, had to be replaced in the 19th minute by Marouane Fellaini after stretching into a challenge with Mohamed Elyounoussi.

Having been reduced to a watching brief since the UEFA Super Cup, Tuesday's Champions League opener against Basle was Lindelof's first taste of playing at Old Trafford - a night the Swede will not only cherish but build on.

Jose Mourinho fears Paul Pogba will miss a "few weeks" with the hamstring injury that took the gloss off Manchester United's straightforward return to the Champions League.

I don't know (what the severity is), Mourinho told MUTV.

"They train together always in the same team because I knew that they had to play this match together".

"It looks for me too (like a hamstring injury) but I haven't spoken yet to the medical department".

"So if no Paul for Sunday, we have (Ander) Herrera, we have (Michael) Carrick, we have Fellaini and we have (Nemanja) Matic".

League leaders United have made a strong start to the season with three wins from their first three games before a 2-2 draw against Stoke City.

However, Mourinho insists the player should have stayed and fought for his place, but he elected to move to the La Liga club on a temporary deal, "It was a personal decision that I don't agree with, a decision I don't think honestly is the best decision for him, a decision that disappoints me".

"If you want to anticipate the next weekend (against Everton), I probably play Bailly and Jones because today they didn't play, because they are fresh, because it makes sense for them to play again".

"So we need this and in the Premier League and the Champions League I have to choose the players in relation to the quality".
