Hollywood Police Chief Tom Sanchez said investigators believe the deaths at the Rehabilitation Center were heat-related and said the a criminal investigation is underway.

A third call later came in as well, police said. A patient had gone into cardiac arrest - and died.

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, Johnson went to visit her friend in the hospital.

U.S. President Donald Trump paid a visit on Thursday to Gulf Coast Florida communities recovering from the hurricane, praising first-responders for their role in limiting the toll taken on human lives.

Stepped-up efforts came after the eight deaths at the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills, which shocked Florida's top leaders even as they surveyed destruction from a storm that spread its punishing effects across the entire state. "Inexcusable", U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson added.

Named in the complaint as defendants are the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills, the facility manager and the administrator, among others. As many as 100 hospital employees rushed over to help.

"I have nobody", she said.

Word of the crisis soon reached relatives.

Vendetta Craig's mother, 87-year-old Edna Jefferson, was one of the 145 patients evacuated. She finally found her mother, with doctors from Memorial already applying ice and giving her intravenous fluids.

"People are telling me different things", she said Wednesday evening. That's 25.6 percent of all customers in the state.

Officials acknowledged many of those questions at Thursday's briefing, but they also said they're still working on definitive answers. Also, information released by the state said 44 nursing homes were evacuated or closed.

Paulburn Bogle, a member of the housekeeping staff, said after the air conditioning failed, the staff used fans, put cold towels and ice on patients and gave them cold drinks. So as a precaution we're moving everybody over so they'll be more comfortable. The mother, Libia, who also suffers from dementia, was in another nursing facility and doing better. "I'm as shocked as you".

The attorneys representing the nursing home did not immediately respond to ABC News' request for comments regarding the complaint, the allegations made by Veroy or the calls that were allegedly made to the governor's office. The centre showed deficiencies in maintaining fire and safety standards pertaining to exits and storage areas, as well as more serious problems with its generator maintenance and testing, according to February 2016 reports by Florida Agency for Health Care Administration inspectors.

Asked what she'd like to say to the facility's owner, Craig said, "We coming for you". There were overflowing trash bins, rusty air conditioning vents, soiled bathtubs and cracked or missing bathroom floor tiles. "But nobody from the facility has told me anything yet".

The video begins with a shot of Veroy's 89-year-old father, lying in bed dressed in a hospital gown, holding a Styrofoam cup. Moulder's mother was released from the hospital to a new nursing home. Both of her parents are still being treated after the ordeal, but she said she does not know which facility she will place them in when they are discharged soon.

On Friday, parent company NextEra Energy referred CNN to a statement on its website, that says, in part: "Because of the current investigations associated with these tragic events involving the nursing home, we are limited in what we can say".
