DR Congo security forces shoot dead 37 Burundi migrants

Congo is home to thousands of Burundian refugees

While the precise circumstances are not yet clear, reports indicate that in the course of a confrontation with Burundian demonstrators, Congolese security forces opened fire on the crowd. The death of the Congolese army officer led to "the escalation of violence".

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General Congo, Maman Sidikou, in a statement said that he condemned the acts of violence perpetrated in Kamanyola.

Residents in the area tell The Associated Press the killings occurred after some Burundian refugees went to the bureau of intelligence in Kamanyola to inquire about four detained refugees.

An altercation between the refugee group and the Congolese officials erupted, Mr. Kijana said, and some of the Burundians began hurling stones at the officials and members of the security forces.

The clashes broke out when refugees were opposed to repatriation to Burundi, Kasereka said. "No person who is a beneficiary of this (refugee) status is supposed to have an assault rifle".

Kamanyola is home to 2,000 of the almost 44,000 people who have fled Burundi to neighboring Congo, according to the U.N. Refugee Agency. Many fled political violence in 2015.

The Burundian protesters, she said, "were not happy because four of them have been expelled from Congo".

An official says Congolese forces have allegedly shot and killed 34 Burundian refugees in an area near Burundi's border.

Burundi's foreign minister, Alain Aime Nyamitwe, on Twitter asked Congo and United Nations officials for an explanation of the shootings.
