Irma's powerful eye landed in the Keys as a Category 4 hurricane Sunday morning, swelling waterways to an estimated 10 to 15 feet in some areas, CBS News correspondent Elaine Quijano reports.

"I think folks listened to us", said Gastesi.

"This thing is a monster", he added.

High winds snapped power lines and left nearly 6.5 million homes and businesses without power in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Alabama, state officials and utilities said.

"This is going to be a very, very lengthy restoration, arguably the most lengthy restoration and most complex in USA history", he said, asking that customers be patient. Category 3 storms have winds from 111 to 129 miles per hour, but a 130-mph wind gust was recently reported by the Marco Island Police Department.

We're going to dedicate much of this hour to reporting on Hurricane Irma, which is working its way up Florida's west coast.

Weathermen warn, tropical Storm Irma is progressively losing its power as the National Hurricane Center has ceased issuing warning of a hurricane instead they warn of a tropical storm. Scott said Saturday night that the outages expected to grow as Irma moves closer to the state.

Evacuations were ordered for several areas in South Florida and the Florida Keys this week.

260 shelters are open across the state, and Scott urged those who have been asked to evacuate to consider staying in shelters rather than evacuating "hundreds of miles".

Irma continued its slog north along Florida's western coast having blazed a path of unknown destruction.

"These are storms of catastrophic severity and we are marshalling the full resources of the federal government to help our fellow Americans", Trump said.

Gov. Nathan Deal on Sunday declared all of Georgia's 159 counties in a state of emergency as Hurricane Irma barreled toward the Peach State.

Irma, which regained Category 4 strength early yesterday, prompted one of the largest evacuations in United States history.

- At least 26 deaths have been blamed on Irma in the Caribbean islands, where it hit before barreling toward Florida.

But it was nothing like the force delivered by deadly Hurricane Irma, which battered many islands, including Barbuda, just days ago.
