EasyJet launches cheap long-haul flights

easyJet: 'buy a flight from Belfast to Buenos Aires' through new Gatwick link

EasyJet claims this is the first time a low-priced European carrier has formed such a partnership.

Passengers taking connecting flights via London Gatwick - such as those travelling from Aberdeen to NY - will be able to book the entire trip on easyJet's website. From London Gatwick, Norwegian already offers direct, affordable long-haul flights to 13 destinations, including 11 major USA cities, plus Singapore and Buenos Aires. easyJet flies on more of Europe's 100 largest routes than any other airline, according to Norwegian.

While EasyJet still won't be offering their own direct long-haul flights, they will now let customers use their website to book long-haul flights with other carriers.

The announcement represents one of the most significant strategic changes made by the airline since it introduced allocated seating in 2012.

Customers will still have to recheck their own baggage between flights, although this can be done in baggage reclaim through the Gatwick Connect service. So far, Loganair has signed up to offer passengers the ability to buy onward flights from Glasgow and Edinburgh to the Scottish Highlands and islands, as well as the Glasgow to Barra link, the world's only scheduled service to a beach airport. In addition to collaborations at Gatwick, the company plans to expand to other key airports in Europe such as Milan Malpensa, Geneva, Amsterdam, Paris Charles De Gaulle and Barcelona.

EasyJet insisted the scheme will not impact on its punctuality or operating model.

Easyjet will also sell stand-alone tickets on behalf of partner airlines, allowing customers to book flights without connections. Should a passenger miss a connecting flight they will be transferred to the next available flight.

Launched by easyJet today, "Worldwide by easyJet" allows passengers to seamlessly connect their easyJet flight with other partner airline flights, including Norwegian's fast-growing network of affordable long-haul flights to the U.S, Asia and South America. EasyJet's partnership program will allow the airline to compete more effectively with rivals including British Airways.

"By opening this new market segment this now means that easyJet can access a greater range of passengers flying across Europe". The huge list of destinations includes New York, Vancouver, Singapore and Buenos Aires.
