Her campaign has been spearheaded by Maryam Nawaz, the couple's daughter and Nawaz' political heir apparent, in her first real foray into electoral politics.

Kulsoom is undergoing throat cancer treatment in London.

The ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party hopes to see a resounding victory in the vote.

Her rival candidate, Dr. Yasmin Rashid from Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) of Pakistan's former cricket star Imran Khan, obtained more than 46,000 votes, local Dunya TV reported, quoting unofficial results. Voters in the NA 120 constituency are familiar with her and are keen that she returned to Pakistan ahead of polling day on Sunday. Ahead of announcing that his wife Kulsoom Nawaz would contest the by-election, it had nearly become clear that Abbasi would remain a "permanent PM" till the next polls.

Some voters complained that the process inside the polling stations is taking too long.

According to reports voting turnout in the morning was low but pace picked up in the afternoon.

Long lines of voters were seen at numerous NA-120 electoral constituency's 220 polling stations in the eastern city, capital of Punjab province, on Sunday.

Some voters complained about the delay they had to endure before they could cast their votes and also that their names were missing from the polling list, while others rued inadequate facilities, such as the lack of electricity at the stations.

"I congratulate you PML-N tigers", she said, while speaking to supporters in Model Town. No one was injured. She bagged 52,000 votes in general election of year 2013 while Nawaz Sharif won by bagging 92,000 plus votes. The activists of the JuD and its another front Falah-i- Insaniat (FIF), campaigned for their candidate Sheikh Yaqoob.

He said Sharif tried his best to pressurise the Supreme Court with "gimmicks" like his GT Road Rally after his disqualification.

This past weekend, crowds mobbed Ms Maryam's auto and threw rose petals as she criss- crossed the eastern city of Lahore campaigning for her mother, Mrs Kulsoom Nawaz, the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party's candidate to contest the seat Mr Nawaz was forced to vacate by a Supreme Court ruling in July.
